**Coronation Street** (often called *Corrie*) is a British soap opera that first aired on ITV on 9 December 1960, produced by Granada Television. The show is set on a cobbled, terraced street in the fictional Greater Manchester town of Weatherfield, which was inspired by Salford, the hometown of creator and first screenwriter Tony Warren. Initially broadcast twice a week, the programme expanded over time and, since January 2026, has aired five half-hour episodes per week. Warren’s concept was originally rejected by Granada founder Sidney Bernstein, but producer Harry Elton persuaded him to commission 13 pilot episodes. **1960s** The first episode aired on 9 December 1960 at 7 pm, receiving mixed reviews. *Daily Mirror* columnist Ken Irwin predicted it would last only three weeks, and the paper declared the programme “doomed from the outset” for lacking reality. Granada had commissioned 13 episodes, with some inside the company doubting it would last beyond that run. But viewers quickly connected with its everyday characters. The show also introduced Northern English dialect to a wide audience, with terms like “eh, chuck?”, “nowt”, and “by ‘eck!” becoming familiar on British television.
