Lore & Background
Home and Away was created by Alan Bateman after a trip to Kangaroo Point, New South Wales, where locals complained about the construction of a foster home. The show was initially called Refuge but was changed to the 'friendlier' title Home and Away. It premiered as a ninety-minute telefeature, not a pilot, and subsequent episodes run twenty-two minutes. The series initially focused on the Fletcher family and their foster children, and has dealt with adult-themed storylines such as teen pregnancy, rape, and drug addiction.
